Is the idea of making a difference important to you? Do you have kids? If so, one of the things you have probably pondered is, “How do I plant the seed for them?”
One way is to incorporate making a difference as a recurring part of their experience through family volunteering. (If you’re just starting to explore family volunteering as an option, here is a good family volunteering guide from PBS.)
The act of volunteering itself is a good start, but if you really want to squeeze all the juice there is to get out of the time and effort you have all invested, don’t stop there.
Use the experience as a starting point for exploration and insights. Open the door for conversations about what they did, what they thought, and what they felt. Help them connect the dots between what they did and why the world is a little better place.
The guide from PBS has a few questions to help you facilitate those conversations. Here are several links with more.
Family volunteering – Reflection
As with so many things in life, asking questions can expand the value of the experience exponentially.
Do you volunteer as a family? What kinds of questions do you ask? I would love to hear.
