Every morning I follow the same routine. Get up, wash my face and brush my teeth, resist meditating, meditate, make coffee, and dive into my morning reading.
The morning reading is a way to set the stage for the day in a positive way. One of my favorite kinds of morning books are ones with a positive focus and short, self-contained nuggets you can digest in one sitting.
Kathryn Hall’s book, Plant Whatever Brings You Joy fits that bill splendidly. I first connected with Kathryn in her role as a book publicist. Her motto, “Changing the world one book at a time,” resonated with me. What I didn’t know at the time was that she was leading a double life. She was also…<cue ominous music>…a gardener!
I’m a sucker for a good analogy, so it stands to reason that I would dig Kathryn’s book. Plant Whatever Brings You Joy takes insights gleaned from 20+ years of gardening, blends it with an eclectic array of experiences, and distills it all into 52 lessons on life. Lessons such as:
- Bring gentleness and gratitude to your harvesting
- Prune vigorously with faith that new life will return
- Plan your activities in harmony with the season
- Clean up after a storm
- And of course, Plant whatever brings you joy
The book was perfect for my morning reading because each of the 52 lessons are snack-sized, a few pages at most, ideal for picking up, reading a few pages, and then diving into the day. Some of the lessons are sweetly touching, others make you stop and think.
Kathryn’s book is a perfect example of how much there is to learn from our experiences in everyday life, if we’re paying attention.
